Standard Meta-Game Crunch

by: Michael Nyberg 6/22/2009 8:36:44 PM

It has been a while since my last article, and while I could bore you with some tournament reports, I will instead present you with my current research on cataloging the Standard Meta-Game. I will say though, that I have become a Faerie player again. I tend to play control decks and the Fae is too good right now to pass up. I took the deck to a 5-3 finish at the Indy PTQ last weekend, and a 6-2 finish at the St. Louis PTQ the weekend prior. Which really sucked, since at 6-1 I could not draw into the top 8 and I lost the last round to Benjamin Costrell who was playing Black/White Tokens. Who I told after our match he had to take down the tournament and he proceeded to lose first round of the top 8. Oh well… If you want tournament reports on these let me know.

As far as the point of this article goes, I researched every domestic Pro Tour Qualifier and all Grand Prix tournaments since Regionals that I could find. Here is a list of all the decks that have made a top 8 play off at least once…

Combo Decks
Elf Combo
Cascade Swans
Sanity Grinding

Token Decks
Black/White Tokens
Green/White Tokens

Agro Decks
Red/Black Agro
Mono-White Kithkin
Green/Black Elves
Jund
Finest Hour
Doran Rock
Black/White Kithkin
Dark Bant
Blue/White Merfolk

Agro-Control Decks
5 Color Blood
Faeries

Control Decks
Blue/White Reveillark
Turbo-Fog
5 Color Control

Mid-Ranged Decks
Elementals
Naya Mana Ramp
Jund Mana Ramp
Boat Brew
Warp World
Treefolk Rock

Here is the short part where I get to feed you my input on the meta. The following decks are what I feel to be solid choices for any major tournament. Granted this will have to be revised after M10 is released since if it is true that they are going to be reprinting good, possibly powerful cards again, instead of this watered down crap we’ve had since 7th edition, the meta-game will likely change.

The Best Choices
Blue/White Reveillark
Faeries
5 Color Blood
Doran Rock
Green/Black Elves
Black/White Tokens
Jund

Blue/White Reveillark is a solid deck because it has good matchups against most agro-decks, and as you can see from the previous set of lists, Agro decks make up a huge part of the meta. The only real problem with this deck is that it has one of the few near auto-losses in standard, to Faeries.

After a short hiatus for Regionals, Faeries is once again one of the best decks in the format. It has good matchup against combo decks and a near auto-win against Reveillark, as well as it can compete against any of the Agro decks. Faeries is still highly pliable to skill level, meaning that you can take down difficult matchups that are considered bad for the deck if you posses a high enough skill level.

5 Color Blood looks more and more like Jund these days, just splashing blue for Cryptic Command. I consider both of these decks to be solid as both can hit fast, as well carry the necessary removal and tools to combat most of the meta-game.

Black/White Tokens makes the list despite not being as powerful as it was during Regionals. Thank you diversified meta-game. It provides legions of tokens from turn 3 on. Ajani Goldmane was made to service this deck, through both token pump and removing -1/-1 tokens from persist creatures. And Zealous Persecution works as a one sided wrath of god against Faeries. Identity Crisis cannot be overlooked as well since it is a wrecking ball to control decks such as Reveillark.

Doran Rock and Green/Black Elves round out the list. Both of these decks can provide massive beatings in the form of cheap, under-cost’d creatures, while utilizing removal such as Maelstrom Pulse to control the game. Both of these decks can compete against Cascade Swans, which is the most prevalent combo deck in the format. And the Treefolk Harbingers in Doran have to be the best tutor in the meta-game.

The Decent Choices
Cascade Swans
Mono-White Kithkin
Black/White Kithkin

Cascade Swans falls a level below what I would choose for a tournament. The deck has proven itself to be very powerful, and able to compete at the top tables in the late rounds of Pro Tour Qualifiers. But after Chicago Regionals and Grand Prix Barcelona, everyone knows it’s out there, and good players, which compete at the PTQ level, will not show up unprepared for this deck. If you can fight through the hate you can probably do well with this deck, but good luck.

Kithkin is always a good deck. But Doran and Elves are just better. If you are playing Kithkin these days load up on your Paladin En-Vec for the sideboard, if not main deck, since the card will halt Doran and Jund decks in their tracks.

The following list are decks that I would absolutely not consider taking to a tournament at the moment. It is not necessarily that they are bad decks, people have made top 8’s with them in the last month. But overall they seem to be lacking something necessary to compete against the meta-game as a whole. With enough skill some of these decks can top 8, but if you have that much skill anyways, why not put it to better use piloting another deck, instead of fighting an uphill battle. I will say that I am sorry to put 5 Color Control on this list. As a past 5CC player I love the deck, but it worked best when there wasn’t such a diversified meta-game. Now there is just too much to out there for the deck to handle. It has made top 8, but it seems unable to finish 1st.

The Bad Choices
Elf Combo
Sanity Grinding
Green/White Tokens
Red/Black Agro
Finest Hour
Dark Bant
Blue/White Merfolk
Turbo-Fog
Elementals
Naya Mana Ramp
Jund Mana Ramp
Boat Brew
5 Color Control
Warp World
Treefolk Rock

The rest of the article is basically sample decks for each of the ones in the meta-game. I hope this article was helpful, and feel free to comment on it. I like hearing feedback from people.
